SCTV cast 1981

Cycle 2 was produced for NBC's 1981-82 season, kicking off in October of '81. For the new season, the 90 was dropped from the name and the show became SCTV Network. The show also received a bit of a facelift - a new generic opening, theme music by Ira Newborn, new staff announcer Robert Corness, and new logos and bumper graphics. Sets were changed as well - Guy now has a large wood-panelled office.

It is a superb set of shows, featuring among the finest wraparound concept episodes in CCCP1, Zontar, The Godfather, and the Staff Christmas Party.

*In January 1982, NBC aired three compilation specials with repeats from previous shows billed as The Best of SCTV. The two last shows in the cycle also feature an SCTV Classics segment of repeats to end the show. This heavy use of repeats was then used as a plot element in the first show of cycle 3.

Best of the Best: CCCP1, Zontar, The Godfather, SCTV Staff Christmas Party

No wraparound, just a bunch of superb sketches. Standouts include Walter Cronkite's Brain and the Merv Griffin 60's promo. Perini Scleroso is featured in a series of commercials for various products. Screen Acting with Woody Tobias and Dr Tongue is listed as a Sunrise Semester in Dave Thomas' book, but doesn't have the actual Sunrise Semester intro; it does, however, use the Sunrise Semester set. Pre Teen Alexis Shannon is named after Catherine O'Hara's nieces, Alexis and Shannon.

Additional Viewing: Gangway for Miracles is a parody of The Miracle Worker. The Merv Griffin 60's Show has plenty of 60's counter culture references and is loosely based on Easy Rider. Walter Cronkite's Brain includes a segment based on Superman, with a Star Wars light sabre duel thrown in. Emergency Caterers is a rather nifty parody of Emergency!, right down to those red toolboxes.

Syndication Note: Pre-Teen World, Steeplechase and Screen Acting were cut from syndication

DVD Note: The Merv Griffin 60s Show has several music changes - Merv's rendition of 'Light My Fire' has been replaced, a brief cue of Mrs. Robinson has been replaced, and in Heffner's penthouse, Merv's rendition of Graham Nash's Chicago (We Can Change The World) has been cut. The Looney Tunes theme has been replaced at the end of Videodating, requiring a new voiceover.

Credits

4/2 - 5 Doorway to Hell with Eugene Fodor
Airdate: 20 November 1981

Back to top Previous episode Next episode

Features one of the better uses of a musical guest in New York Rhapsody, while Bobby Bittman gets his brother Skip a spot on Maudlin. The Doorway to Hell sequence is totally off the wall: having run out of ideas for programming, Guy takes suggestions from the crew, a strategy taken straight from The Second City stage. The resulting set of bits is the most unusual in the SCTV canon, and in the end, the dummy steals the show.

Additional Viewing: New York Rhapsody is a spoof of the 1946 film Humoresque, starring Joan Crawford and John Garfield as Paul Boray. Judd Hirsch in Doorway to Hell spoofs his role in Ordinary People.

Syndication Note: Doorway to Hell and Nana Mouskouri were cut, and Pepi Longsocks and New York Rhapsody (Eugene Fodor's performance) were edited

DVD Note: Gordon Lightfoot no longer sings every song ever written, as Supercalifragalisticexpialidotious has been cut.

5 The Sammy Maudlin Show: Bobby and Skip Bittman 095

(Already in progress) Bobby is singing his unique version of "My Melody of Love." Sitting down at the panel, they discuss family values. Bobby introduces his brother Skip, who does a routine that bombs. Joining the panel, Skip starts getting on Bobby's nerves and they argue in (imperfect) Yiddish (translation courtesy James Gray):

Herschel (Bobby): Vos tutsu tzu mir? (What are you doing to me?)

Tzvi (Skip): Vos sich zehn mir? Gornisht! Verzogt tzu mir a tchainik!

"Vos sich zehn mir?" is a bad way of saying "What are you saying to me?" "Gornisht" means nothing. "Verzogt tzu mir a tchainik" literally means "You are talking to me a teapot." This may be a poor attempt at an old saying "Hak mir nicht in tchainik," which literally translates as "Don't bang on my teapot" and means "Don't get on my nerves" or "Don't drive me crazy." Skip is either saying "You are talking crazy at me" or "You're getting on my nerves" but it's not very good Yiddish.

Herschel: Gedenkst gevesen tzu bringen sie oyf dem Maudlin Show! (Not very good grammar, but essentially he is saying "Remember, it was me who brought you on the Maudlin Show!")

Tzvi: Ver vays fun Maudlin Show? Groisse Gedilleh! Phtooey! (Who cares about the Maudlin Show? Big deal! Phtooey!)

Herschel: Du vayst uz siiz network. Du machts gelach fun mir! (You know this is network. You're making fun of me!)

Tzvi: Du bist a nar! (You are a fool!)

Madison gets some mileage out of the cross your heart bra line, and gets a suite. Richard Dreyfuss is in their suite. Mrs Madison gets a little hysterical because her husband never wrote her a Broadway play. He puts her to bed, and sits down to write the last act of the new play he's written for her, and falls asleep. He wakes at midnight to find a giant mouse raiding his fridge. The nutcracker prince shows up.

7a Neil Simon's Nutcracker Suite Part 2 131

The Prince invites Madison to his room, the Nutcracker Suite. They run into Dreyfuss on the way, ranting about sharks in the hotel pool. Inside, they meet the Snowflake King and the Sugar Plum Fairy, who complains about typecasting. Madison gets the ending for his play, and is woken by the alarm clock. A finished script is sitting next to his typewriter. Marsha wakes, and Neil gives her the script.

At the producer's office, however, Epstein lets him have it for writing "this bomb". Despite this, Marsha still loves him, because he's the best writer in all the land. The play ends (the office scene, as it turns out, is on stage), and they take a bow. The play is a hit after all. As they leave the hotel, they run into Dreyfuss, who is dragged away by men in white coats. They hail the same cab as Caine and Smith; Alda's driving the cab.
